Sati and Vedas

Image
Sati and Vedas   The other repondents have done a good job - I shall just add my two bob’s worth. In her book “Genocide of Women in Hinduism”, by Sita Agarwal, she mischievously quotes R.V. 10:18:7 to support her allegation that Sati started with the Vedas and was affirmed and endorsed in the Smritis and Puranas. I agree with her that the Smritis and Puranas did indeed popularise this evil custom but there is fundamental principle in Hinduism regarding Scriptural exegesis. The Vedas alone are authority ( pramāṇam ) and if there is a conflict between them and the latter Smriti and Puranic literature, then the Vedic injunction alone is to be accepted and all else is rejected. So an honest and objective understanding of the Vedic position is crucial to this debate. So what does Rig Veda 10:18 actually say? – imā nārīravidhavāḥ supatnīrāñjanena sarpiṣā saṁ viśantu | anaśravo'namīvāḥ suratnā ā rohantu janayo yonimagre || R.V. 10.18.07 7. Let these unwidowed dames with ...

Woman and Vedas

Woman and Vedas In Sanatana Dharma, firstly you are identified as soul , your gender doesn't play any role here. There is one frequent example of Mata Kausalya(mother of Sri Rama) who recite vedic hymn: सा क्षौम वसना ह्ऱ्ष्टा नित्यम् व्रत परायणा | अग्निम् जुहोति स्म तदा मन्त्र वत् क्ऱ्त मन्गला || २-२०-१५ Kausalya , who was interested to practise religious vows regularly was appearing auspiciously by wearing a white silk sari and gladly performing sacrificial ceremony in a sacred fire , by reciting vedic hymns . In addition, Valmiki Ramayana: Ayodhya Kanda - Sarga 25 also contains such verses: इति माल्यैः सुर गणान् गन्धैः च अपि यशस्विनी || २-२५-२६ स्तुतिभिः च अनुरूपाभिर् आनर्च आयत लोचना | Uttering thus, the illustrious Kausalya having large eyes, worshipped troops of divinities with garlands , sandal paste and befitting hymns of praise . ज्वलनम् समुपादाय ब्राह्मणेन महात्मना || २-२५-२७ हावयामास विधिना राममङ्गलकारणात् | Duly procuring fire, she caused oblation to be poured ...

Brahmi script and Sanskrit Language

Image
Brahmi script and Sanskrit  I have seen few videos by NeoBuddhist who claim that Sanskrit cannot be written in Brahmi and it can be written only in Devnagari script and hence Sanskrit came into existence much later and that Sanskrit was derived out of Pali. They also claim that Ashokas inscriptions mention "Baman" so there were no Brahmins during Ashokas period.  One such person spreading this fake narrative is Rajendra Prasad Singh,  it seems he is a   historian, Author, Linguist, Professor & Activist,   several youtube channels are quoting him and fooling innocent people   Tripitaka Before we look into Tripitaka let me explain the various texts of Buddhism Hinayana Literature The Pali Canonical text are Tripitikas  Vinaya Pitaka, Sutta Pitaka and Abhidhamma Pitaka The largest and most important of the three is Suttapitaka which consists of 5 Nikayas(group) Digha, Majjhima, Anugutra, Samyukta and Khuddaka Nikaya (Jatakas, Dammapa...
